Our Impact on the Planet

Humans & Nature | Beauty & Disaster

Imagine for a moment the life of a majestic Bald Eagle. An apex predator highly adapted to it's environment. A national symbol of power and freedom. Suddenly, buildings exist where a forest once stood, powerlines clip wings and for reasons unknown eagle egg shells crack and the eagle population goes with it. That is the life of a Bald Eagle in the 21st century.

Thankfully we've discovered the chemical in pesticides that was weakening the eggs of eagles and have broadly eliminated it's use. However, a problem still remains. Are we telling the full truth?

It isn't just the Eagles, globally wildlife populations has seen a 60% extinction of overall life. Select places, like fresh water areas and the rainforest, have seen a 90% decline in wildlife. So it would be more truthful to show a kangaroo mother with joey next to a burnt out plantation than a lush forest. To show an orangutan left homeless near a palm oil plantation.

Regardless of which direction we as humans decide to take for our future, it is important to understand what we face and what we stand to lose. The stakes we play for so to speak. My time and energy as a photographer are unequivocally tied to conserving nature, ecosystems and with honestly sharing what I've seen and learned. This page is a landing point and maybe a starting point for those wanting to learn more or to follow along with me.
